  • Needed to support multiple databases easily
  • Needed PHP components they had built to be widely used
  • Needed a new design and easy-to-search features

Solution: DotKernel , Zend Framework and PHP 5

Background

With clients that process more than 100 orders/day using multiple servers and cluster architecture, XpressBoxes absorbed the wisdom that only comes from repeatedly solving challenges that face enterprises building reliable, secure and high-availability web sites and web services.

Xpressboxes is the one stop shop for moving supplies that can dramatically simplify the process of moving. This company purchases large quantities of boxes so they can suit every client’s need. Whether it’s a large or small move, personal or business, Xpressboxes focuses on simplifying the moving and storage process for the millions of people who move every year.

Xpressboxes achieved many years as an online business company and now their main goal is to improve and expand their business further on. That’s why the company adopted once again DotBoost’s solution on building a new design and an e-commerce platform. DotBoost’s involvement meant using PHP 5, DotKernel and DotCart - dedicated ecommerce engine created by the same DotBoost company - and Zend Framework, a high quality open-source framework for developing web applications and web services with PHP. Design in the true spirit, Zend Framework delivers easy-of-use with powerful functionality and fast-time-to-market for building modern, attractive and secure websites.

Our Involvement

Due to the fact that DotBoost team was in charge with building XpressBoxes site in the first place, the whole process went smooth and easy. Originally, XpressBoxes needed a new design and up-to-date features, so choosing a code base well documented and easily understood by a large community of developers happen to be the suitable solution. PHP 5, DotKernel and Zend Framework provided the perfect fit for rebuilding XpressBoxes. After looking at a number of other possible solutions for changing XpressBoxes into a much more professional solution, DotBoost came with the idea of implementing DotCart, a dedicated ecommerce engine, built on DotKernel and Zend Framework.

Solution In Action

What DotBoost team decided is going with standard PHP 5, DotKernel and Zend Framework to provide them with an extremely simple, objected-oriented, and flexible solutions that encapsulates best practices which would result in a very rapid development of enterprise-grade web application.

The implementation

The solution adopted by DotBoost was a great success. DotBoost team managed to implement new features and new web services without any downtime or disruption. In fact, the whole project was completed on time, and that is after only 6 months working on this project. The keyword for making this project 100% running is Efficiency; and, of course two main benefits that have contributed for expanding Xpressboxes:
- DotKernel which is just a simplified MVC architecture very easy to learn by intermediate level programmers and which has eliminated the complexity of Zend Framework by using a different approach of how the web request are handled. DotKernel’s main benefit and efficiency is the fact it uses from Zend Framework only the necessary classes.
- Zend Framework Both development team and their e-commerce clients benefit from because it simply provides:
* widespread community support. This benefit also applies to new staff as well, because it can be more easily to find developers that are already familiar with Zend Framework.
* an object-orientated library of code that gives them a simple and painless transition to data-using web services.
* a use-at-will architecture because flexibility is an important part of the design of Zend Framework and this philosophy continues to guide the ease-to-use (or to be more user-friendly design) and modular nature of future enhancements as well.

The Results

The XpressBoxes project has built an expanded standard e-commerce platform with DotKernel and Zend Framework, that is reliable, secure and engineered for performance . XpressBoxes is just one of the success stories written on DotBoost’s portfolio among many others. DotBoost is also proud to have succeeded implementing its own web application, DotKernel, and to solve client’s demands with promptitude and efficacy.
